Brahms and Ligeti at LOC with Leon Fleisher
The legendary Leon Fleisher and Katherine Jacobson Fleisher host a chamber concert celebrating the legacy of Dina Koston, co-founder of the Theater Chamber Players. On the program are Brahms’s Liebdeslieder-Walzer, a solo piano piece by Koston, and two tremendously difficult and fun “imaginary operas” by György Ligeti from the mid-sixties entitled Aventures and Nouvelles aventures.
I’ve performed the Ligeti with Mr. Fleisher in Philadelphia and New York over the last couple of winters and had a terrific time. (It’s the Times review quoted there in my banner.) I don’t want to give away too much about the pieces; I can only say that even if postwar central-European avant-gardism doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you owe it to yourself to come anyway.
The concert (more details here) is at Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress, on March 8 at 8PM. Tickets (where and how to order) are free except for the usual service charges. They become available on February 1 and could go fast, so mark your calendar!
